Learning benefits
- 💡 This activity provides rich sensory input through touch, sight, and even sound as the objects move. It helps develop fine motor skills as babies reach, pat, and squish the bag. Understanding cause and effect starts to develop as they see their actions impact the objects inside. Milestones this age: Rolls from tummy to back • Pushes up to elbows or straight arms on tummy • Brings hands to mouth • Reaches for dangling objects with both hands • Begins to pass toys from one hand to the other • Starts to babble with different sounds.
Safety notes
- ⚠️ Always supervise your baby during this activity. Ensure the bag is securely sealed with tape to prevent any leaks or access to small contents. Contents must be larger than 1.25 inches in diameter or safely contained. • Never leave baby unattended during tummy time or any activity. • Place baby on their back for sleep, alone in a crib with a firm mattress and fitted sheet, free from loose blankets, bumpers, or toys. • No screens for babies under 18 months, except for live video chat. • No honey for babies under 1 year. • Watch for choking hazards: whole nuts, grapes, hot-dog rounds, popcorn, and hard candy can choke a child. Always cut food appropriately for your baby's age and developmental stage. When to call your pediatrician: If your baby seems very stiff or very floppy • If your baby doesn’t bring things to their mouth • If your baby doesn’t push down with their legs when feet are placed on a hard surface • If your baby doesn’t track objects with their eyes • If they are not babbling or making sounds by 6 months of age.
Cleanup
- 🧹 Wipe down the Ziploc bag for future use, or dispose of it. Store small objects for another play session. Wipe up any condensation or spills with a towel.
