Learning benefits
- 💡 This activity teaches children about the harsh conditions of the ocean's midnight zone and the fascinating biological adaptations of deep-sea life. It builds spatial reasoning and engineering skills as children translate flat materials into a dimensional, wearable structure. Additionally, working with sticky foam, wire, and paint provides rich sensory feedback that supports fine motor development.
Safety notes
- ⚠️ Adult supervision is required when handling the thin copper wire and battery packs to prevent wire punctures. Ensure the battery compartment of the fairy lights is securely screwed shut so children cannot access the button batteries. Do not let children place the painted surfaces of the mask directly against their lips or mouth.
Cleanup
- 🧹 Wipe any excess yellow acrylic paint off fingers and brushes immediately with warm, soapy water. Peel up any stray bits of electrical tape from the table and discard them along with the leftover foam backing sheets. Store the finished mask on a flat shelf away from moisture to protect the delicate copper wire circuit.
