Learning benefits
- 💡 This activity visually demonstrates a simple chemical reaction, as the citric acid in the lemon juice oxidizes and turns brown before the paper itself can burn. It also strengthens fine motor control through the act of drawing with the swab and teaches the value of patience while waiting for the map to dry and be revealed.
Safety notes
- ⚠️ An adult must ALWAYS handle the heat source, as incandescent lightbulbs become extremely hot and can cause immediate, severe burns upon contact. Never allow a child to hold the paper near the heat source. Keep all flammable materials, including extra paper, away from the lamp during the reveal step.
Cleanup
- 🧹 Carefully dispose of the used cotton swabs and pour any remaining lemon juice mixture down the kitchen sink. Wipe down the work surface and the bowl with a damp cloth to clean up any sticky residue. Be sure to let the lamp and lightbulb cool down completely for at least 30 minutes before touching or storing them.
