Learning benefits
- 💡 This game builds executive function as children listen, wait, move, stop, and shift plans when a cushion disappears. It supports body control because children practice landing gently, navigating space, and matching movement to sound. It also gives real practice with co-regulation: you model calm language when someone misses a cushion and help them recover without shame. Working memory grows as children remember the current rule, the safe route, and any added challenge like clapping before sitting.
Safety notes
- ⚠️ Use cushions on a rug or non-slippery surface, and avoid small throw pillows that skid out from under a fast-moving child. Keep the rule "sit, don't leap" clear, especially for ages 3-4 who may launch themselves at the nearest cushion. Do not place cushions near coffee tables, stairs, heaters, glass doors, or sharp furniture corners. If children are different sizes, space them out and use walking-only rounds to prevent bumps and pileups.
Cleanup
- 🧹 Have everyone return cushions to the couch, bed, or basket as the final part of the game rather than a separate chore. Do a quick floor check together for moved rugs, stray socks, or anything that slid underfoot. If feelings ran high, end with one sentence each: "My favorite round was..." to close on connection.
