Learning benefits
- 💡 This activity promotes sensory exploration and tactile discrimination as children navigate different textures. It visually and physically demonstrates how root systems anchor plants and navigate physical obstacles in the soil. Additionally, manipulating the gel and moving the pellets builds hand strength and fine motor coordination.
Safety notes
- ⚠️ Adult supervision is recommended while using scissors to cut yarn and felt. Ensure the sensory bag is sealed completely to prevent gel leakage, and do not allow children to put the dried chickpeas or gel in their mouths.
Cleanup
- 🧹 Wipe down any stray gel drips from the workspace with a damp paper towel. Store the tactile map flat in a cool place for future sensory play, or carefully remove the gel bag and rinse it out in the sink if you wish to recycle the plastic.
