Materials

  • soft, lightweight scarf or dish towel1

Setup

  1. 1Find a soft, clear space on the floor.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 1First, find a cozy, soft spot for your sweet little one to stretch out on their tummy. Make sure their head is comfy and happy, ready for some fun!
  2. 2Now, get down on their level, right in front of them! Look into their beautiful eyes and share a big, warm smile – they love seeing your happy face.
  3. 3Next, grab that soft, lightweight scarf or dish towel you have handy. Gently, playfully, drape it right over your own head, just for a moment, so your face disappears!
  4. 4With your face hidden, chime in with an excited, playful voice, "Oh, where did (Parent's Name) go?" Your baby will be wondering what delightful thing is about to happen!
  5. 5Then, with a flourish, quickly pull the scarf away while exclaiming, "Peek-a-boo!" Make a super happy face – seeing you reappear is pure joy for them, and helps build that special connection.
  6. 6Look closely at your baby's reaction – are they giggling, wide-eyed, or trying to reach out? Give them a little moment to soak in the fun before you play again. This helps them process and anticipate the next surprise!
  7. 7To add another layer of discovery, try holding that scarf just above their head, gently swaying it from side to side. Watch as their little eyes follow its movement – this is wonderful for their developing eye coordination!
  8. 8And as you sway the scarf, you might even notice them try to lift their tiny head ever so slightly to keep the scarf in view. This gentle movement is a lovely way to encourage those new neck and back muscles to get a little workout, all while having a grand old time together.

Example playthrough

"Baby Leo is on his tummy, looking around. His mom, Sarah, kneels in front of him with a soft blue scarf. She covers her face, 'Where's Mama?' Leo lifts his head a tiny bit, curious. Sarah quickly pulls the scarf away, 'Peek-a-boo!' Leo's eyes widen, and he lets out a little gurgle of delight. Sarah smiles, 'Did you find me, sweet pea?' He kicks his legs happily, ready for another round."

Variations

  • Once your baby is looking for it, try draping the scarf over a favorite soft toy and revealing it, saying 'Where's bear?'
  • Vary your voice: try a quiet 'where are they?' and a louder 'peek-a-boo!'
  • Place the scarf slightly to one side of your baby to encourage them to turn their head and look.

Learning benefits

  • 💡 This game encourages your baby to lift their head to see the 'disappearing' scarf, building important muscles for future milestones.

Safety notes

  • ⚠️ Always supervise your baby during tummy time. Ensure the scarf is lightweight and allows for easy breathing; never leave the scarf unattended with your baby. No choking hazards for this activity.

Cleanup

  • 🧹 No mess, just put the scarf away.
