Learning benefits

  • 💡 This activity helps children practice slowing their bodies through playful co-regulation with you. The bedtime sequence supports working memory as they remember what comes next, while the slow finger movements build fine motor control and attention. Taking turns as performer, watcher, or director gives practice with listening, flexible thinking, and impulse control. The silly puppet also makes routine tasks feel less like commands and more like shared connection.

Safety notes

  • ⚠️ Keep the play in one seated or lying-down spot so slow-motion walking does not turn into tripping in dim bedtime light. Avoid putting fingers in anyone's mouth during the pretend toothbrushing; keep all brushing pretend on the puppet hand. For younger children who may grab or bend fingers hard, use a relaxed fist puppet and gently say, "Soft hands with the sleepy puppet." If the game starts ramping your child up with loud laughter or chasing, end with the three-yawn closing ritual and move straight into the real routine.

Cleanup

  • 🧹 There is almost nothing to put away, but do reset the room by smoothing the blanket, moving any bedtime items back where they belong, and turning the light to its usual bedtime level. If your child added imaginary props, name them as you close: "The pretend toothbrush is away, the pretend pajamas are folded, and the puppet is asleep."
