Learning benefits

  • 💡 This activity provides a tangible, real-world example of the greenhouse effect and solar power, making abstract scientific concepts concrete. Following the construction steps enhances sequential thinking and fine motor skills, while observing the cooking process reinforces scientific patience and observation.

Safety notes

  • ⚠️ An adult must handle all cutting with the craft knife. Though it's a simple oven, the interior surfaces and aluminum foil can become surprisingly hot, so use caution when opening the box and removing the food. Never look directly at the bright reflection of the sun on the foil flap, as it can be damaging to your eyes.

Cleanup

  • 🧹 After enjoying your s'mores, allow the box to cool completely. Carefully remove the aluminum foil and plastic wrap and discard them in the trash. The black paper, if soiled with food, should also be thrown away, while the clean cardboard box can be flattened and placed in recycling.
