- 💡 This activity teaches children about thermal energy and state changes as sugar transitions from a solid to a liquid and back to a brittle solid. It also strengthens hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness through the rhythmic flicking motion used to create the fine webs.
Safety notes
- ⚠️ Molten sugar is extremely hot and can cause burns; an adult must handle the stovetop boiling phase, monitoring the thermometer closely. Children should only perform the spinning step once the sugar has cooled slightly to a safe, warm temperature, and thick oven mitts should be worn by the supervisor throughout the cooking process.
Cleanup
- 🧹 Soak the saucepan and forks in hot, soapy water for 15 minutes to easily dissolve any hardened sugar residue. Peel any stray sugar drips off the parchment paper and throw them in the trash, then wipe down the countertops with a warm, damp cloth.
