Learning benefits
- 💡 This activity teaches children about electrostatics and the concept of fields, demonstrating how like charges repel. Children practice fine motor skills when trimming delicate silk and learn scientific variables by testing different charging materials. It also builds spatial awareness and sensory processing through physical control of the hovering object.
Safety notes
- ⚠️ Ensure children do not run while holding the rigid PVC pipe to prevent accidental falls or injuries. Adult supervision is recommended when cutting the silk fabric with precision scissors. Keep balloons away from children under 3 years old to prevent choking hazards in case of popping.
Cleanup
- 🧹 Wipe down the PVC pipe with a damp cotton cleaning rag to remove static charges and store it safely. Place leftover silk scraps in a recycling bin and store the main silk sheet flat in a plastic bag to keep it dry and dust-free. Pop and dispose of the latex balloons or store them safely away from pets and small children.
