Learning benefits
- 💡 This activity teaches children about physics by physically demonstrating how rotational motion generates centrifugal force, pushing objects outward from the center. It develops spatial awareness as children predict how speed and paint placement affect the final pattern. It also builds fine motor skills through squeezing, taping, and operating the hand-powered spinning mechanism.
Safety notes
- ⚠️ Children should be Supervised while using scissors to cut the cardstock circles. The salad spinner must be placed on a sturdy, level surface to prevent it from tipping over during high-speed spinning. Ensure all paint materials are non-toxic and kept away from the eyes and mouth.
Cleanup
- 🧹 Wipe any escaped paint splatters from the outside of the salad spinner with a damp paper towel. Wash the inner basket and clear bowl of the spinner under warm running tap water with a drop of dish soap to remove all paint residue. Wipe the work surface clean with a damp sponge and store the paint bottles with their caps tightly sealed.
