It also helps them develop coordination between their eyes and feet, and learn to control their body movements intentionally. Following directions and navigating obstacles also gently nurtures their understanding of spatial concepts. Milestones this age: Your 30-36 month old may be able to stand on one foot for a few seconds, kick a ball forward, walk up and down stairs holding on, and run fairly well. They are also starting to understand concepts like "over," "under," and "behind." They can follow two-step instructions and use 3-5 word sentences while actively engaging in pretend play.
Safety notes
- ⚠️ Always provide active supervision during this activity. • Ensure the floor is clear of any other toys or hazards that could cause tripping. • Use painter's tape, which is designed to adhere well but also remove easily without damaging surfaces, reducing slip hazards. • For any "obstacles" added to the tape line, ensure they are soft, stable, and low to the ground to prevent falls. • No screens during this play to maximize engagement and developmental benefits. When to call your pediatrician: If your child is not walking steadily, frequently falling, or has difficulty with basic gross motor skills like jumping with both feet off the ground, it’s a good idea to chat with your pediatrician. Also, if they struggle to follow simple instructions or are not speaking in short sentences, discuss your observations with your doctor.
Cleanup
- 🧹 Simply peel up the painter's tape from the floor and discard it. Gather any small toys or beanbags and return them to their storage. This activity has minimal cleanup!
