Learning benefits
- 💡 Digging the hole and carefully placing the plastic cup develops fine motor control and hand-eye coordination. The process of waiting 24 hours, then observing and recording the findings in a notebook, teaches patience, reinforces the scientific method, and introduces basic data collection skills.
Safety notes
- ⚠️ An adult must supervise when using the garden trowel to dig in the yard. Be aware that some spiders or insects can bite or sting; use the magnifying glass for observation without touching the bugs directly. Wash your hands with soap and water after handling soil and the trap.
Cleanup
- 🧹 Carefully release any live insects back into the yard away from the trap area. Remove the plastic cup, wash it with soap and water, and use the garden trowel to fill the hole back in with soil. Dispose of the used fruit bait in a compost or trash bin.
