Learning benefits
- 💡 This activity teaches children concrete principles of density, volume, and displacement as they manipulate the mass of their submarine. It introduces chemical reactions through gas release, showing how physical states of matter change from solid and liquid to gas. Kids also practice the scientific method by repeatedly testing and adjusting variables to achieve a specific target.
Safety notes
- ⚠️ Adult supervision is required when breaking the effervescent tablets. Warn children never to consume the tablets or drink the water in the testing tub. Ensure the workspace is kept dry to prevent slipping hazards from splashed water.
Cleanup
- 🧹 Wipe down the wet tabletop workspace with a dry microfiber towel to prevent water damage. Pour the blue water from the large tub down a sink drain, rinse the plastic submarine parts with fresh water, and allow everything to air dry completely on a drying rack.
