Learning benefits
- 💡 The snug blanket pressure can help some children notice where their body is in space, which supports body awareness and calmer movement. Reading a familiar book adds predictability, giving working memory and attention a gentle, low-demand job. Your steady voice and repeated check-ins build co-regulation: your child borrows your calm while practicing how to name what their body needs. Choosing tighter, looser, arms in, or arms out also strengthens decision-making during transitions.
Safety notes
- ⚠️ Keep your child's face, nose, and mouth completely uncovered, and never wrap around the neck. The wrap should be snug, not tight: your child should be able to breathe normally, speak, and get out quickly if they want. Avoid this activity for any child who feels trapped, has breathing concerns, or is in a panic state; offer a lap blanket or side-by-side reading instead. For ages 3 to 4, keep the wrap brief and extra loose, with arms out if they cannot clearly tell you how it feels.
Cleanup
- 🧹 Unroll the blanket slowly and invite your child to help fold it once, even if the fold is lumpy. Put the book back in its usual spot and say your closing cue again so the calm routine feels finished. If the blanket got twisted or warm, shake it out and leave it ready for the next quiet-time reset.
