Quiet Time & Calm Corner

Five-Senses Anchor Check

Use the classic 5-4-3-2-1 senses check to help your child settle their body and attention when they feel worried, wound up, or stuck. You can do it anywhere in about 15 minutes, with no supplies, by gently naming what is real and present right now.

Learning benefits

  • 💡 This activity builds emotional regulation by giving your child a concrete path back to the present when thoughts or feelings feel too big. The counting sequence supports working memory and executive function because they have to hold the pattern while choosing sensory details. Naming what they notice strengthens language, observation, and body awareness. When you do it beside them calmly, they also practice co-regulation: borrowing your steady pace until they can find their own.

Safety notes

  • ⚠️ Do not ask your child to smell or taste unknown items, cleaners, lotions, plants, art supplies, or anything they are allergic to; familiar air, water, or "no taste" is enough. If your child has sensory sensitivities, avoid forcing eye contact, loud listening, strong smells, or scratchy textures, and let them skip any sense that feels upsetting. For younger children, keep any optional sip or snack age-safe and allergy-safe, and never use hard candy or small choking-risk foods as the taste anchor.

Cleanup

  • 🧹 There is usually no physical cleanup, but take ten seconds to reset the space by turning the TV back on only if you truly want it, moving cushions back, or putting the homework page aside. End by thanking your child for trying, not for being calm, so the activity still feels successful even if big feelings remain.
