Learning benefits
- 💡 This activity strengthens your baby's leg muscles, improves balance, and helps them build the coordination needed for independent walking. It fosters a sense of accomplishment and independence as they learn to move themselves around with support, a crucial step in their gross motor development. Milestones this age: Stands holding on. Gets to a sitting position without help. Pulls to stand to get up. May take a few steps holding on while cruising. May stand alone. Looks for things he sees you hide. Says “mama” and “dada” and a few other words like “uh-oh”.
Safety notes
- ⚠️ Always supervise your baby during this activity. • Ensure the push wagon is sturdy and designed for babies learning to walk, with good stability and no risk of tipping. Avoid baby walkers that allow free movement, as these are not recommended by the AAP. • Ensure there are no small objects on the floor that could be choking hazards (anything smaller than a 1.25-inch diameter). • Keep the play area clear of obstacles and sharp edges. • Remember ABCs of Safe Sleep: Alone, Back, Crib. No loose blankets, bumpers, or toys in the sleep space. • No screens for babies under 18 months, except for live video chats. • No honey before age 1. • No whole nuts, whole grapes, popcorn, hard candy, or hot dogs cut into rounds due to choking risk. • No cow's milk before age 1. When to call your pediatrician: Doesn't crawl. Drags one side of body while crawling (for 6-7 month old). Doesn't stand when supported. Doesn't babble “mama” or “dada”. Doesn't look for things that you hide. Doesn't use gestures like waving bye-bye or shaking head no. Doesn't point to things.
Cleanup
- 🧹 Return the push wagon and toys to their storage spot. Ensure the play area remains clear for future play.
