Learning benefits
- 💡 This pretend wellness visit helps children practice executive function by following a familiar sequence: check in, vitals, exam, prescription, goodbye. It supports co-regulation because you model calm voice, consent language, and gentle pacing when a patient feels nervous. Children build working memory as they remember each stuffie's concern and match it with a caring response. The role-play also gives them words for medical routines, which can make real appointments feel less surprising.
Safety notes
- ⚠️ Keep this fully pretend: do not use real medicine, real medical tools, sharp objects, or breakable thermometers in the game. Avoid putting anything into a child's, adult's, or pet's ears, nose, or mouth, even in pretend. For ages 3 to 4, keep the exam on stuffed animals only if your child is still learning gentle pressure. If doctor play brings up fear from a recent appointment, slow down, let the stuffie refuse parts of the exam, and skip any step that feels too intense.
Cleanup
- 🧹 Ask your child to discharge each patient by saying one kind closing line, then return the stuffed animals to their usual basket, bed, or shelf. Smooth the rug or couch cushions and say, "The office is closed until next checkup," to mark the transition. If the storytime prescription is still going, promise one final sentence before moving on.
