Learning benefits
- 💡 Measuring the baking soda and granulated sugar with the teaspoon measure refines fine motor skills and introduces basic concepts of volume. Observing the instant bubbling when the lemon juice is added provides a tangible, memorable lesson on acid-base chemical reactions and the creation of carbon dioxide gas.
Safety notes
- ⚠️ Ensure an adult cuts the fresh lemon in half before the child uses the lemon juicer. Be careful when pouring the lemon juice to avoid getting the acidic juice in the eyes. Place the clear drinking glass on a tray to contain any potential overflow from the fizzing reaction.
Cleanup
- 🧹 Rinse the clear drinking glass, lemon juicer, teaspoon measure, and stirring spoon with warm, soapy water. Wipe up any spilled cold water, granulated sugar, or baking soda from the countertop with a damp cloth.
