- 💡 This activity builds executive function as your child plans a hairstyle, remembers the client’s request, and follows the salon’s gentle-touch rules. Pretend customer conversations support language, perspective-taking, and social confidence because your child practices asking, listening, and responding. Brushing stuffed animals or carefully brushing a caregiver’s hair strengthens fine motor control and body awareness. The clear pause-and-stop rule also gives practice with consent, co-regulation, and noticing another person’s cues.
Safety notes
- ⚠️ Use only soft brushes or pretend hand motions; do not include scissors, razors, hair dryers, curling irons, clips with sharp teeth, sprays, gels, or anything that could go in eyes or mouths. For ages 3-5, keep caregiver hair turns very short and model brushing the ends only, since young children may pull suddenly when excited. Avoid styling pets, babies, or any child who has not clearly agreed, and stop immediately if brushing hurts, tangles, or becomes rough.
Cleanup
- 🧹 Have your child escort each stuffed client back to its “home shelf” or basket while you put brushes away together. Shake out the towel if you used one, do one final floor check for small accessories you decided not to use, and say, “Salon reset, clients are resting.”
