Learning benefits
- 💡 This activity strengthens the precious bond between you and your baby, teaching them about communication and emotional expression. It helps them understand cause and effect – that their actions can elicit a response from you – which is a building block for future social interactions and language development. It also helps them begin to recognize and understand different emotions. Milestones this age: Your baby will likely be smiling spontaneously, laughing aloud, and starting to look for you when they hear your voice. They may also begin to babble with different sounds and enjoy looking at themselves in a mirror. They are learning to reach for objects and bring them to their mouth.
Safety notes
- ⚠️ Always supervise your baby during playtime. Ensure the play area is clear of any small objects that could be a choking hazard (smaller than 1.25 inches in diameter). Never leave your baby unattended. For sleep, remember the ABCs of Safe Sleep: Alone, Back, Crib. No screens for babies under 18 months, except for live video chats with family. Never give honey to a baby under 1 year old. When to call your pediatrician: If your baby doesn't smile spontaneously, doesn't bring their hands to their mouth, doesn't try to get your attention through sounds or actions, or doesn't respond to sounds around them, please talk to your pediatrician. These can be signs that your baby might need extra support.
