Learning benefits
- 💡 This activity gently introduces oral hygiene habits, crucial for lifelong dental health. It also fosters a strong bond between caregiver and baby through comforting touch and soothing talk. It lays the groundwork for self-care routines in a positive way.
Safety notes
- ⚠️ Always supervise your baby closely during this activity. • Ensure the washcloth or gauze is very soft and clean. • Washcloths/gauze should be larger than 1.25 inches in diameter to prevent choking hazards. • Keep the water lukewarm, not hot. • Never force your baby's mouth open or continue if they are distressed. • Remember to place babies on their back to sleep, alone in a crib without loose blankets or pillows (ABC: Alone, Back, Crib). • No screen time for babies under 18 months, except for live video chat. • Never give honey to infants under one year of age due to the risk of botulism. • Avoid small, hard choking hazards like whole nuts, grapes, hot-dog rounds, popcorn, or hard candy. • Never use baby walkers. • Avoid crib bumpers or weighted sleep sacks. • Cow's milk is not recommended for infants under 12 months.
Cleanup
- 🧹 Rinse the washcloth thoroughly and let it air dry, or place it in the laundry. Put away the bowl and teething toy. Keep oral hygiene items easily accessible for the next session.
